About us
About the department
The Department of Turkic Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, Eötvös Loránd University, is a scholarly and educational center with a history of more than 150 years. We are dedicated to the comprehensive study and teaching of the Turkish languages, literatures, cultures, and histories spanning from the Balkans and steppe regions to Central Asia.
Education
Through its BA specialization in Turkish within the program Eastern Languages and Cultures, as well as its MA and PhD programs in Turkology, it serves as one of Central Europe’s most prominent centers of Turcological education. Our mission is to provide students with a deep, interdisciplinary understanding of the past and present of the Turkish-speaking world. Our curriculum includes instruction in modern and classical Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, and Azerbaijani, alongside the exploration of Turkish literature and culture in their rich diversity. Students also take courses in history, religion, cultural studies, and literary studies, enabling them to gain a complex understanding of the Turkish world.
Through international partnerships, students can participate in Erasmus+ and other exchange programs at universities in Turkey and Central Asia.
Research
Our faculty members are active researchers in Turkology, philology, linguistics, and in the study of Turkish–Hungarian historical and cultural relations.
Student life
An active student community is closely connected to the department, organizing academic, cultural, and translation workshops as well as study trips.
Thus, the Department of Turkic Studies functions not only as an academic and research center, but also as an inspiring cultural hub and a key institution representing Turkish language and culture in Hungary.
